The Gybe – Action 3

Key points:

  • Steer smoothly with a constant arc
  • Keep the boat flat as the crew moves in
  • Don’t release the kite or main sheet

Helm

Continue steering the boat into the gybe on a constant arc. Notice how little rudder is still used.

Wait until the crew has moved into the boat before moving yourself.

Keep tension on the mainsheet so that the boom does not get let out.

Crew

Pull yourself up on the trapeze handle and step into the boat.

Notice how the back hand with the kite sheet in is held high so as not to let the kite out. This is critical if the kite is not to flap or float forwards and twist.

Focus should be on the luff of the kite and making sure it is flown correctly.
