The Gybe – Action 6

Key points:

  • Don’t release the sails
  • A quick tug on the kite sheet can stop it twisting
  • Maintain boat heel to keep it carving round

Helm

Put the tiller extension down on the far rack. This helps your balance and keeps the steering steady as the boom gybes over.

Keep hold of the trapeze handle and mainsheet for as long as possible. This helps you keep your balance again and stops the main going out just at the point it is about to gybe.

Notice how the main is still sheeted fairly hard. This helps the boom to gybe early so you don’t have to over-steer. Start to get low in the boat but stay on your feet.

Crew

Give the kite sheet a sharp tug and then release it as you sheet quickly on the new sheet. This stops the kite floating forwards and twisting.

Keep yourself low in the boat as the boom is about to gybe.
