The gybe set is a useful
manoeuvre to have in your repertoire. It allows you to get
quickly to the left of the run if that side is advantageous.
It can also be useful if you are stuck in the pack and need
to clear your wind. But beware the boats still coming upwind
on the starboard lay line.
The aim is to complete the hoist as you
are doing the gybe. The start of the manoeuvre is the same
as the hoist but try to come in a little high of the lay
line so you can maintain plenty of speed and complete some
of the bear away before you get to the mark.
As the crew starts hoisting keep the turn
going into a gybe. The crew should have the kite ¾
of the way up by the time the gybe happens.
As the boom comes over the crew has to
get very low and keep hoisting with small arm movements.
This avoids banging elbows on the boom.
Fill the kite as the gybe completes and
then bring the boat up to full speed.
