The Hoist – Action 6

Key points:

  • Steer to keep the boat deep, steady and flat
  • Main should be right out unless the nose starts to go down
  • Hoist quickly but smoothly

Helm

If possible get the boat to sail as deep as possible while still on the wire. This makes the hoist a lot easier for the crew. The spinnaker is then hidden behind the mainsail so it doesn’t load up or flap.

Keep the boat steady so the crew doesn’t lose balance as they hoist.

Crew

Grab the kite halyard and start the hoist. Plant your feet wide and either side of the boat. This helps with balance and puts you in a good position to rip the kite halyard up.

Use a large hand over hand movement. Try not to twist the rope as you let go so as to avoid knots. Make sure you pull the rope smoothly but fast.

A top tip is to use yellow builders’ glass-carrying gloves which help with grip.
