Light Airs Downwind
Launch in external player

Key points:

  • Boat trimmed down at the bow
  • Ease the mainsail out as far as you can without it back winding
  • Sail as low as possible with the kite still pulling

The boat needs to be trimmed so the bow is down and the transom lifted as much as possible out of the water.

The main is eased outside the quarter of the boat unlike the heavier airs where it is held a lot tighter. The jib should be well eased to allow the air to flow between the mainsail and kite.

The kite should be kept just curling. If the kite starts to collapse because there is too little breeze try raising the dagger board, heading up and letting the boat slip slightly.

Helm
Sit forward by the shroud and balance the boat using the trapeze if needed. Set the trapeze wire high to allow you to move easily in and out. Steers as low as you can with the kite still pulling.

Crew
Sit facing forwards in front of the mast so you can see the kite. Keep your weight low and forwards.
