The gybe is initiated by
the helm using their body weight to heel the boat to windward,
even jumping out on the trapeze handle for a few seconds.
This starts the turn. While doing this the helm also moves
back in the boat to cross behind the mainsheet.
The crew should have both kite sheets
in their hands and the slack taken out of the new one. They
should be facing forwards in the centre of the boat in front
of the mast and stand up as the gybe starts.
As the boat is rolled the crew concentrates
on letting the kite fly forwards slightly and then sheets
through quickly on the new kite sheet. They can help slightly
with the roll but should concentrate on the kite and passing
between the mast and the jib.
The helm crosses the boat as in
a normal gybe but as he passes the mainsheet and tiller
to the back hand he goes straight for the handle rather
than hooking on. This allows the boat to be flattened quickly
and brought straight back into the normal sailing position.
