The gybe set in light winds
follows the same general principles as a windier set.
The helm’s moves are exactly the
same as in the twin wired method. The main difference is
that a little more heel can be used to help the turn. The
helm can also flatten the boat by going straight out on
the trapeze handle after the gybe if they need to.
The crew has the light wind difficulty
of having to get out of the bow to make the hoist and then
back into the bow on the new gybe without shaking the boat.
Notice how in the video example the crew
moves around the outside of the shroud. This is easier and
smoother to do and also if timed correctly has the added
advantage of starting the turn by heeling the boat to windward.
Again the trick in light wind is
to settle down quickly into your normal positions after
the manoeuvre.
