Keep the boat flat. Maximise
your leverage on the wire by keeping your feet together
and on your toes. Helm and crew should be standing shoulder
to shoulder.
Trim the boat so the bow is just touching
the water.
As a gust hits release a little mainsail
and luff slightly. Try to both steer and let the main out
so the boat doesn’t stall or come off the plane.
If you get a large gust and have to ease
a lot of main ease a little jib as well. This will stop
the boat staggering as the jib slot is closed by the main
being eased.
If you are having to keep the main
constantly eased then increase the kicker to depower. If
you need to depower more then start using the cunningham.
